Monitoring Trail Conditions: New Methodological Considerations

چکیده
integral component of evaluating carrying capacity, which is defined under the NPS Visitor Experience and Resource Protection (VERP) framework (Manning et al. 1995; NPS 1997) as the type and level of visitor use a park can accommodate while sustaining resource and social conditions that complement the purposes of the park and its management objectives. The VERP framework specifies desired resource and social conditions and incorporates indicators and standards of quality that quantify impact acceptability and impairment. Visitor impact monitoring is an essential component for periodic evaluations of current conditions to compare against standards or to evaluate the success of management actions. Visitor impact monitoring is also a component of the NPS Vital Signs Monitoring Program, which seeks to monitor selected biophysical indicators that represent the health or condition of park natural resources. Visitor use is frequently a primary “agent of change” affecting park vegetation, soil, wildlife and water resources. This paper aims to highlight selected examples of current research on addressing

Integrated Trail Impact, Assessment and Monitoring to Meet Ecosystem Research and Monitoring Needs
Participation in backcountry recreation is growing and changing, increasing the dilemma of how to balance preservation and use values in Canadian protected areas. Recreation ecology research is beginning to evaluate ecological changes in wilderness, including impacts to vegetation, and soils. As a result of visitor use, Backcountry recreation planning models typically require defining acceptabl...
متن کاملThe SLIP technique as a window on the mental preparation of speech: Some methodological considerations
This chapter proposes some improvements on a method for eliciting speech errors, the so-called SLIP technique, including the use of multi-level logistic regression for data analysis. This is demonstrated in an experimental test of a new theory of self-monitoring as the main cause of lexical bias in phonological speech errors.

a data base audit trail. It is defined here to be a generalized recording of " who did what to whom, when, and in what sequence. " This information is to be used to satisfy system integrity, recovery, auditing, and security requirements of advanced integrated data baseldata communications systems. This paper hypothesizes what information must be retained in the audit trail to permit recovery an...
متن کاملEvaluation of Trail-Cameras for Analyzing the Diet of Nesting Raptors Using the Northern Goshawk as a Model
Diet studies present numerous methodological challenges. We evaluated the usefulness of commercially available trail-cameras for analyzing the diet of Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) as a model for nesting raptors during the period 2007-2011. We compared diet estimates obtained by direct camera monitoring of 80 nests with four indirect analyses of prey remains collected from the nests an...
